渡邉 信 Makoto M. Watanabe

 

Professor Watanabe received his Doctor in Science title (botany) in 1977 at Hokkaido University, Sapporo. After a year as Post-Doctoral Fellow, Institute of Applied Microbiology, University of Tokyo, he joined the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) in 1978. During his time at NIES until 2006, Professor Watanabe held several functions. Until 1989, he was a researcher and later senior researcher at the Section of Marine and Coastal Environment, Water and Soil Environment Division. After that he was Chief of Environmental Microbiology Section, Environmental Biology Division. In 1997 he became Director of Environmental Biology Division. In 2006 he became Professor at the Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Tsukuba. At that time, he decided to extend his research to the utilization of algal biomass as an alternative of fossil liquid fuel for the final target and launched the CREST (Core research for evolutionary Science and Technology, Japan Science and Technology Agency) project on algae biomass in 2008(300M¥/FY2008-FY2011). Basic research of CREST developed into a pilot plant project of Tsukuba International Strategic Zone “Practical Application of Algal Biomass Energy” (700M¥/FY2012-2015) and accumulated knowledge and technology in the project extended to four more projects, “Next-Generation Energies Development Program for Tohoku Recovery: R&D Project on Integration Technology of Microalgae Biomass Production into Wastewater Treatment” (850M¥/FY2012-FY2106), Fukushima Renewable Energy Next Generation Technology Development Project using Native Algal Biomass” (1,100M¥/FY2013-FY2015), Algae Fuel Production Demonstration Project, Resource and Energy Agency, Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (420M¥/FY2016-FY2018), and Demonstration Project on Carbon Capture and Functional Bioplastic Material Production by Microalgae, Low Carbon Technology Research and Development Program, Ministry of Environment (500M¥/FY2017-FY2019)

 

In 2015 he set up Algae Biomass and Energy System R&D Center in the University of Tsukuba. Accumulated knowledge and technologies in the ABES are now extending to various research fields including fuels, chemicals, medicine, health, agriculture, and environment.

Professor Watanabe is playing an important role as a senior managing director of Algae Industry Incubation Consortium Japan since June 2009. In the past he was President of the International Phycological Society, Vice-President of World Federation for Culture Collections of Microorganisms (WFCC) and President of Japan Society for Culture Collections of Microorganisms (JSCC). He has been a chair of International Organizing Committee of Asia Oceania Algae Innovation Summit (AOAIS) from the 1st AOAIS 2010 Tsukuba to 3rd AOAIS 2014 Daejeon.

Professor Watanabe was awarded for his work several times. In 1993 he received the Papenfuss Awards of International Phycological Society. In 2007 both the Society Award of Japan Society for Culture Collections, as well as the Tuckerman Award of American Bryological and Lichenological Society. He was selected as one of the Nice-Step Researchers by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in 2009 and as one of the Best Staff Members of University of Tsukuba in 2011. He was awarded “Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing made for Algal Research, ELSEVIER in 2016” and also “Reviewing made for Algal Research, ELSEVIER in 2018”. Because his great accomplishments were highly appreciated by Japan Society of Phycology (JSP), he was awarded the Yamada prize of JSP in 2018.

Professor Watanabe published a number of original scientific papers (196), patents (12), invited review articles (26), books (13), and project reports (46). Based on the refereed papers of 8, 34, 39, 45 and 54, two patents and four patents applications have been made on squalene and / or DHA-rich heterotrophic algae, Aurantiochytrium, two of which were POME utilization and purification by DHA-rich Aurantiochytrium.
