Purposes and Aim of the Research

In the Realm of Bioresource, we carry out fundamental research for ABES such as isolation of novel algae strains, establishment of culture strains, characterization of various algae, and so on. We cultivate and offer valuable algae strains to other realms in order to develop their applied research on algae biomass.

 

Research Topics(1) Isolation of algae strains

We collect and isolate algae from various natural environments such as pond, sea, mangrove forest, etc. Sampling is the first step of the exploration of beneficial algae.

 

Research Topics(2) Establishment of culture strains

Establish cultures by means of isolation and cloning of algal cells. To achieve unialgal or axenic culture, we apply micropipette technique with a microscope, inducers or antibiotics to exclude contaminants. We also conduct study of culture media, temperature, light intensity, etc., to optimize culture conditions of algae.

 

Research Topics(3) Characterization of algae strains

We analyze physiological characteristics and phylogenetic position of targeted algae, with the aim of digging up the academically or industrially valuable algae strains. We also conduct detailed chemical analysis of extracted and purified oils or pigments from algae for the utility evaluation.
